ZIP is an archival and compression format created by Phil Katz for PKZIP in 1989. Today, ZIP is the most widely used compression format on Windows. If you have Windows XP or newer, you will see ZIP files displayed as Compressed Folders.
When you right click on a file or folder in Windows XP and select Send To -> Compressed Folder you are actually creating a ZIP file.
