Paint.NET 3.36 Review

Rating: 5 / 5

Verdict: It's no Photoshop, but it's free and will suffice for most graphics and image editing needs.

We're not huge fans of the image editing software that comes with a new computer or digital camera. For the most part, it tends to be clunky and overzealous about managing your pictures. Paint.NET is positioned neatly about half way between Microsoft Paint and Adobe Photoshop. It's small and fast like Paint, but powerful like Photoshop.

If you're used to using Photoshop, you'll miss some of the image processing capabilities, but casual or home users won't notice the difference. Paint.NET natively supports a wide range of file types, but there are plugins available for many proprietary formats, such as .PSD (Adobe Photoshop).

The bottom line is that Paint.NET is easy to use, easy to learn, powerful and free. We highly recommend it to anybody needing a good image editing program.
